Just a few years back, I was terrible at grocery shopping. My cart was a crazy mess of plastic-wrapped stuff, & my trash can always overflowing.

Then in 2019, I learned about zero waste living, and wow, did it shift everything for me, especially how I shop for groceries.

But you know what, my journey didn’t just stop with grocery shopping. I’ve brought zero waste practices into my kitchen too.

Plus, I’ve cut down on plastic in my daily life. I wrote separate blog posts about all this, feel free to check them out.

Basically,  zero waste grocery shopping is all about cutting back on the waste we make when buying food or groceries.

This means looking at everything—from packaging to food waste itself. When we take this approach, we’re saving money & also doing our bit for the planet.

When I first heard about zero waste living, honestly, I thought it was just for super serious environmental folks. But I was wrong! It’s for anyone wanting to make a positive difference, even if it’s tiny.

Why Adopt Zero Waste Grocery Shopping?

The biggest reason is it’s great for our planet! Next time you’re out shopping, just notice how much plastic trash you toss out after one trip.

By using reusable bags & containers, you can really cut down on that waste. Less packaging means way less junk going into our landfills, oceans, & ecosystems.

Plus, making all that packaging—especially plastic—takes tons of energy & resources. So when you pick package-free options, you’re really helping to save those resources.

Zero waste shopping also changes how we think. You start paying attention to what you buy & consume. And this awareness often spills over into other parts of life, making it easier to live more sustainably.

Plan Your Meals:  By planning my meals each week, I could make a cool shopping list! No more random impulse buys or forgetting veggies that end up going bad!

Embrace Package-Free: Seek out stores with loose produce & bulk items. I was shocked by how many choices appeared when I really looked!

BYOC (Bring Your Own Containers): Reusable bags, jars, and containers are very helpful. I started off small with just a few produce bags and then worked up from there.

Shop Local & Seasonal:  Not only does this cut down on transportation emissions but it usually means less packaging too! Plus—have you tried New Jersey’s summer tomatoes? Totally unbeatable!

Read Labels:  Get good at spotting excessive packaging and finding better options. It becomes second nature after a while; trust me!
