Like many people, I used to toss out so much food. It happened all the time in my kitchen. I’d find stuff pushed way to the back of the fridge and then—oops!—it went right into the trash.

Imagine all that food just getting tossed! Plus, Food waste also means wasting the water used to grow that food—about 25% of all freshwater used in U.S. agriculture goes to food that’s never eaten.

Seeing these numbers made me want to change things up in my tiny kitchen. I picked up some tips along the way about how to use my kitchen better & cut down on waste.

I used to be very poor when it came to meal planning! I’d grab random stuff at the store, forget what was already at home, and then order takeout while my poor veggies wilted away. Sound familiar? Here’s how I got better:

Grocery shopping can feel like a minefield for food waste if you’re not careful! Here’s how I tackle it:

  • Make a detailed shopping list & stick to it like it’s life or death!
  • Buy loose produce: That way, I get exactly what I need—nothing more.
  • Get “ugly” fruits & veggies: They taste just as good but help fight waste.
  • Avoid those impulse buys: Those deals aren’t always as amazing as they sound.

3. Store Your Food Like a Pro

Keeping things fresh is super important when aiming for zero waste! I learned this the hard way after losing too many strawberries to mold:

  • Learn storage techniques: Tomatoes don’t belong in the fridge!
  • Get airtight containers: My glass containers and reusable silicone bags are lifesavers.
  • Use FIFO method: That’s “First In, First Out” folks—put older stuff at the front so you use it first.
  • Freeze extra produce: Herbs go into olive oil ice cubes for later use!

Composting changed everything for me—I’m serious! Even in my small New Jersey apartment, composting is doable:

  • Know what can be composted: Things like fruit scraps, coffee grounds, & eggshells work great.
  • Use compost on plants: My houseplants are thriving thanks to this little trick!
  • Check for community composting options—many NJ towns have gardens or programs!

  • Learn proper portion sizes; I’ve practiced these tons and rarely have plate waste now.
  • Serve family-style; everybody dishes out only what they’ll eat.
  • Save uneaten portions; instead of scraping plates clean, I save leftovers for lunch later.
